Saggar Firing
Saggar Firing
Saggar firing is an ancient and fascinating ceramic technique where pottery is placed inside a protective container called a saggar during the firing process. Traditionally made from refractory clay, the saggar shields the piece from direct flame, ash, and debris in the kiln, allowing artists to control the surface effects more precisely.
In my creative process, I enjoy adding organic materials such as oxides, fruit peels, coffee ground, newspaper or metals inside the saggar alongside the piece. During firing, these materials vaporize and react with the surface of the pottery, creating unique, unpredictable patterns, colours, and textures. Each piece becomes truly one-of-a-kind, shaped by the magic of fire, chemistry, and chance.
