The Abundance of Emptiness :
The case of the Bananas
This project was built around a found object — a banana. Why not?
As I explored the history of bananas and their role in art, I uncovered countless fascinating stories and facts I had never expected. I was truly amazed by the deep and often alarming history of this seemingly ordinary fruit.
Through my research, I discovered a new side to the banana — a fruit I’ve always enjoyed eating — learning about its rich history, its global significance, and the epidemic currently threatening its existence. I began to see the banana not just as an everyday fruit, but as an extraordinary one with a remarkable story, both with and without humanity’s influence.
To create my piece, I used a moulding technique with real bananas to form a bunch. I chose to make them white — a symbol of the fruit’s sickness — and sometimes even hollow inside, echoing the devastating emptiness caused by the current crisis.
